Test Taking Strategies
Are there specific test taking strategies my children should know when taking a test?
The answer is YES!
Consider the following for both standardized tests and classroom tests:
1. Make sure they read all test questions carefully, preferably at least twice, before answering.
2. For multiple choice questions, make sure they ask whether or not there is a penalty for guessing. In other words, if the question is graded as either correct or incorrect, there is no penalty for guessing and all questions should be answered.
3. If there is an additional deduction (penalty) for incorrect answers on multiple choice questions, make sure they know to narrow down the possible answers to no more than two before guessing. If they can't narrow it down, they shouldn't answer it.
4. Advise them to scan the entire test format -- number and type of questions. Teach them to budget their time to be able to complete the test in the alloted time.
5. Remind them to skip questions they don't know and come back to them at the end.
6. If they're using an answer sheet and they skip questions, make certain they pay attention and answer the remaining questions in the proper space on the answer sheet. A mistake in this area may cause them to answer a series of questions in the wrong spaces on the answer sheet.
7. Remind them to bring all allowed materials with them on the test day -- scratch paper, extra pencils, calculators, etc.
Following these secrets will improve their chances for success.
